For shopping, eating, entertainment and people watching, take a stroll along Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. This central pedestrian corridor of Santa Monica, within steps of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Pier, is a heartbeat of excitement. Theater options include improv, magic, and plays, as well as several movie houses. For free, or for a tip, enjoy the street entertainers—buskers here today may become stars tomorrow. You’ll also find sports bars, chocolatiers and gelato cafes, as well as bistros and restaurants for every taste and time frame.
As you shop among the familiar name upscale chains, you’ll also find some surprises, places like Taos Indian Trading Company, Gallery 319, and on Wednesdays and Saturdays, the colorful and vibrant farmers’ market.
In addition to being accessible by taxi and Big Blue Bus, Third Street Promenade has six major parking lots (with public restrooms), free of charge for the first two hours. Traffic to the area is heavy, but once you ditch the car, you can really enjoy the coastal air. Detailed maps of the Promenade are available online.
